Dutch current affairs television program Nieuwsuur aired an interesting segment on the importance of photonics in the Netherlands.
They interviewed ao LioniX, Brilliance, Universities of Technology Eindhoven and Twente and SMART Photonics CEO Johan Feenstra.

Eindhoven is fully committed to integrated photonics. Where Philips once developed the CD is now where the largest Dutch photonics producer is located. This summer, SMART Photonics also received an investment of 100 million euros from the Nationaal Groeifonds and a number of large companies, such as ASML.
Johan Feenstra: “The electronics industry started 40 years ago. Back then, we decided not to build that infrastructure even though we did have the knowledge. If you want to be the center of the photonics industry in 20, 30 years, you must invest now. It’s important that there is public money as well.”
